How to renovate a barrel:
what you need to know to get started

Plato presents the simplest way to renovate a barrel? ? The sun and the warmth are making a timid appearance. You're in the mood for an outdoor aperitif! But the barrel you've collected isn't to your taste. It could do with a good freshening-up.

Plato gives you its homemade tips.

1/ Sanding for wooden barrel renovation

To begin with, renovating a wooden fut isn't very complicated. Start by using a vibrating sander on the wood planks. This will remove the wood's grease and any imperfections (stains, old paint, peeling varnish). There's also a second alternative. You can begin stripping by hand, using 120-grit sandpaper. To complete the sanding, use a finer 150 or 180 grit sandpaper.

2/ Restoration of steel rings

If the steel hoops around the barrel are a little loose, drill them out and screw flat-headed galvanized steel nails directly into the barrel. They won't run away again! Last but not least, you don't need to sand the steel; you can apply anti-rust paint directly. For a more natural version, the hoops will take on a rusty color.

3/ Restoring the wood strips

Should the blades float, you can fill the barrel with water from the stopper. Leave it to soak for a few days: the barrel will regain its shape with the moisture. Once the barrel has been emptied, complete your makeover by applying wood oil or saturator with a brush. Your barrel will be protected for long hours of aperitifs!

The 3 refreshment steps are now complete: you can set up your keg in your garden or on your terrace. It's almost ready for your favorite glasses and drinks! But what's missing to perfect the use of your stand-up eater? A tray from Plato
